The Ray McSavaney Photographic Workshops
San Juan Mountains & Mesa Verde, Colorado
Autumn, 2004
Co-Instructors: Ray McSavaney & Joseph Kayne
Joseph is honored to be selected as a co-instructor of this long-standing and
traditional workshop and arts program.
As part of a serious image maker’s continuing effort to master a creative
approach, this program provides the instructors, information and ideas for
evaluating previous work and taking new work to higher levels. During the
workshop, we will explore the connections between image makers and the world in
which they live, why they choose their subject, how their work evolves, and,
most importantly, what are their future goals and how they can be achieved. This
will be done in a friendly, relaxed and stimulating atmosphere that encourages
creativity and the exploration of new ideas. To aid in fostering and achieving
creative objectives, a combination of critiques, group discussions and
presentations will be offered in the aesthetic and technical aspect of visual
arts. Directed field sessions will provide specialized instruction on a
one-to-one and small group basis. The workshop instructors have been selected
for their knowledge of the artistic process, their ability and commitment to
sharing information, national and international reputations, many years of
dedication to their chosen means of creative expression and their relationship
to the workshop location. The emphasis of the workshops are photography as a
fine art and means of creative expression in the tradition of master landscape
photographers and master printers. The workshops are open to all dedicated
photographers using large format, medium format, panoramic and 35mm cameras.
Ray McSavaney, program director, photographer and writer, has taught and
exhibited extensively. He currently teaches workshops with John Sexton and Bruce
Barnbaum, among others, and was a co-founder of the highly reputable Owens
Valley Photography Workshops with Bruce Barnbaum. Ray has produced an impressive
varied set of images which include landscapes and Native American ancestral
sites. A book of his urban and natural landscape imagery, entitled Explorations,
was selected by the American Institute of Graphic Arts as "One of the Fifty
Best Books of the Year." His work has been published in West of Eden: A
History of the Art and Literature of Yosemite, View Camera, Outdoor Photographer
and numerous other publications.
